Young Explorer Advanced Climbing and Adventure Day Camp

Five days of vertical fun, challenge and learning. This camp is for the young explorer who has taken an interest in rock climbing and likes to get off the ground. The activities are focused on rock climbing and ropes courses. After learning and practicing basic skills such as knots and belay safety systems campers get to experience the excitement and challenge of high ropes course activities such as the Burma Bridge, Catwalk and Wild Woosey. Then it's on to the striking granite cliffs of Acadia and Clifton to climb on real rock. Days will be spent learning climbing skills, rappelling and the importance of assessing and understanding risk while having a ton of fun. Emphasis will be on individual, partner and group safety throughout the week. When the body tires of climbing there will be time for swimming, hiking and learning important outdoor skills such as plant recognition and map and compass craft. A great week of focused climbing activity that is sure to raise your climbing skill level in a major way. No previous experience is necessary. Climbing gear is provided. Session 1 - Acadia / Bangor:August 6 - 10
Tuition: $350.00
Day 1: Get to know you games, high ropes course, intro to rope skills.
Day 2: Rock climbing on the coast. More knots and improvised harness making.
Day 3: Bubble Rock climbing rappelling and hiking.
Day 4: Bouldering at Sand Beach, swimming, natural anchors, first aid skills.
Day 5: Sea cliff climbing, tyrolean rope traverse.
RAINY DAY OPTIONS Generally we try to proceed with planned activities for the day unless there is lightning danger or a major storm. Should weather preclude continuing with the day's activities we can visit the climbing wall and swimming pool at the local YMCA or spend a few hours indoors bowling.
MEETING / PICK UP LOCATIONS
Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School runs a convenient daily shuttle between Orono and Bar Harbor. The schedule will be as follows: Morning pick ups and afternoon drop offs will be in Orono (at 92 Main St, Alpenglow Adventure Sports) at 7:45 and 5:30, Brewer at 8:00/5:00 (at Brewer Auditorium parking lot), Ellsworth at 8:45/4:15 (at McDonald’s parking lot), and Bar Harbor at 9:30/3:30 at Acadia Mountain Guides, 228 Main Street. Again, times are approximate. Please allow 15 – 20 minutes either way for traffic, etc. Please let us know if you will be late for a drop off or pick up so that we may update other parents.
MEALS
Young Explorers’ day campers should bring easy to eat lunches and drinks. Please try to package food and drinks in non-breakable containers.
EQUIPMENT LIST FOR ADVENTURE DAY CAMPS

__ Hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers, not a slip on type
__ Lightweight, loose fitting long pants that dry quickly
__ Warm socks (wool), hat
__ Shorts and Tee shirt if weather appropriate
__ Rain jacket & pants –even if it doesn’t rain they are handy if it gets windy at the sea cliffs
__ A second set of clothes is always a good idea especially if the weather is rainy
__ Swimsuit and towel
__ Sunscreen / lip balm
__ Insect repellent
__ Camera if you want
