Jr Guide Training: Leadership Camp

youth leadership camp

Ages 14-18

This is the first step to becoming a Jr. Guide. While learning mountaineering skills and camp craft students gain valuable leadership skills that are applicable to all facets of life — school, jobs, community and home, as well as travel in the mountains. This is seven challenging days of fun in the Maine wilderness, and a requirement for entry into our Jr Guide apprentice program. This camp explores leadership in a mountain and wilderness environment. Each day mountain leaders take on various leadership responsibilities and teach each other important wilderness skills such as proper preparation and dress, navigation, Leave No Trace fires and shelters, campsite set-up, natural history, wilderness first aid, water treatment, mountaineering fundamentals, meal preparation, and emergency procedures. A major focus of leader school is building good expedition behavior – communication, problem solving, and building / maintaining trust among group members. Successful expeditions depend greatly on the contributions of each team member.
